Chris Bambridge
Born in Kettering in England in 1947, Chris Bambridge arrived in Melbourne in 1974, already a Grade One referee with aspirational ambitions, but few
would have predicted the impact he would have in his adopted home and on the international stage.
His talent was recognised almost immediately, with a couple of seasons biding his time in the Victorian Metropolitan League, he was appointed to the State League panel in 1976, his officiating impressing so much that he was named Victorian Referee of the Year. This led to his appointment to the national panel for the inaugural season of the National Soccer League, where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
Bambridge was awarded Victorian Referee of the Year on six occasions, and National Referee of the year twice, once in 1988 and again in what proved to be his final season in 1990-91. He officiated four NSL Grand Finals, his final match in front of a full house in a thrilling encounter between South Melbourne and Melbourne Knights at Olympic Park. He ultimately officiated 228 matches across fifteen seasons in the National Soccer League.
Bambridge was awarded his FIFA badge in 1981, gaining selection to the panel of linesmen for the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia that year. Following his appointment for the quarter finals, semi-finals and final of the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship. Bambridge refereed the final of the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship in China.
He was also selected for and officiated at the 1986 FIFA World Cup finals in Mexico and the 1988 Summer Olympic games in South Korea, becoming the only Australian referee to have taken part in both a World Cup and Olympic Games finals.
While his officiating career may have ended in 1991, Bambridge continued to serve the game on multiple committees, including the Victorian division of the Australian Soccer Referees Federation (later Soccer Referees Victoria), where he was President for over a decade. He served on the Appeals Board to the Federation Tribunal and was a Member of the Industrial and Amateur Soccer League.
Bambridge was appointed to the role of Referee Development Manager with the Victorian Soccer Federation in 2001, administering the development and appointment of referees in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria in a role he held until his professional retirement at 2014. He served at length as a Match Commissioner for the A-League, a role he continues to fulfill with Football Victoria.
In 2000, Bambridge was admitted into the Football Australia Hall of Fame and was awarded Life Membership of Football Victoria in 2015. In 2009, he was a recipient of the Asian Football Confederation Gold Star Award and remains the only Australian referee to receive this honour.
With over half-a-century of involvement in Victorian football, Chris Bambridge has scaled the mountain in his chosen craft and continues to mentor young match officials in their quest to follow a trail he blazed in his prime.
